Handmade Bricks

handmade bricks are made by pressing clay in to blocks and then putting them in to a kiln to harden. In the early days of brick making they were not fired and they were just left to be dried in the sun. These types of bricks were used for many centuries and are even used today in regions with very hot climates. A brick is a block of ceramic material that is used in the masonry construction industry and is normally laid used a mortar. Bricks can be made from clay, shale, soft slate, calcium, concrete of even shaped from quarried stone. However clay is the most commonly used material, with modern bricks formed in one or three processes, soft mud, dry press or extruded. The soft mud brick method is very common this in because it is economical, it is made with raw clay and is preferably in a mix with 25-30% sand to reduce it from shrinking. The clay is first ground and then mixed with water to form the correct consistency. The clay is then pressed in to moulds this can be done with a hydraulic press. This is then fired in the kiln to achieve maximum strength.

Brian Mear was formed by Mr Brian Mear in November 1996. Brian has spent the last 13 years working for one of the UK’s leading brick manufacturers, it was natural progression with a career of over 35 years in the construction industry. His idea of the brick library although it was not totally unique was being approached from a completely different angle which provides a level of technical expertise, and customer service that cannot be matched by building merchants and other brick suppliers. The aim of his idea is to source the material as closely as possible to the existing materials being used in and around the building site area. This is also to be supported by a high level of technical expertise and advice, which means that the customer will get the perfect materials for their project. The technical advice will also offer a site matching service and quantifying materials from a drawing if this is also required. The brick library contains a large variety of brick samples with nearing 500 to choose from.
